FOM-Rijnhuizen has started her fundamental energy research programme in 2012 under the name FRM institute DIFFER (Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research). To provide for a better housing and improved embedment in the academic environment, DIFFER moves office in 2015 to a university campus. In 2010, Dutch universities submitted proposals for the institute’s establishment on their campuses,
after which the FOM executive management selected the Eindhoven University of Technology campus. There, a new building has been constructed to house the DIFFER institute. In 2011, Aronsohn Management has been appointed as the project’s construction manager.

The building combines various functions, including experimental halls and spaces, office rooms, conference facilities etc. The building, sized approximately 11.000m2 GFA, is positioned on a central location of the Eindhoven University of Technology campus. The design is made by Ector Hoogstad Architects and comprises a three story building, topped with a technical floor. Facilitating internal and external communication is crucial to this design. Furthermore, the building is flexible and can easily adapt to facilitate changes in research.

Since sustainability was an important theme to the client, it was aspired to attain BREEAM certification with ambition level ‘Very Good’. By now, the project has been awarded the BREEAM ‘Excellent’ certificate. Upon its delivery in 2015, the DIFFER laboratory building was the only one of its kind with this BREEAM Excellent score.
